Concentration in Game Programming
Concentration in Game Programming

The Concentration in Game Programming has been offered by the Department of Information Technology since 1999, and is available to undergraduate students in the Information Technology and Computer Science departments of the College of Computing, and graduate students in the MSc in Information Technology program. Historically, students from the Computer Graphics Design (CGD) program, the Film, Video & Animation program, and students pursuing a degree through the Multi-Disciplinary Studies program are also welcome. The Concentration was founded by Andrew Phelps, but now includes coursework from several faculty in the Information Technology Department.

This concentration contains coursework which is designed to prepare students to work on game engine development teams in the gaming industry, or as systems designers in related fields such as real-time simulation, military simulation, and Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE's). The focus of the concentration is the construction of 2D and 3D graphics engines, using a modern graphics API. Each engine is written from scratch to ensure understanding at every level of its design. All work in the concentration is done in teams: students are expected to be both capable and diligent in the co-operative construction of their projects.

PLEASE NOTE: This concentration is not the same as pursuing a MInor in Game Design & Development, which is described here.

Game Programming Concentration Paths

The following represents a short guide to the courses in the concentration, and the paths for students to take the concentration from within the College of Computing and/or from CIAS. If none of these paths work for you, and you are still interested in pursuing the concentration, then please see your departmental academic advisor.
